by Randy

Hi my little Leatherpagers. Did you miss me? What do you mean you’ve only written one post how could I possibly miss you? Okay. I admit I’ve been neglecting you. There are no excuses, but I will say that I’ve been having bandwidth issues (both literal and figurative).

I promise I’ll pay more attention to you from now on. I do have some great ideas for a few articles, but in the meantime, let me give you some lesbian bondage…

A little back story: my lesbian girlfriend (“lg”) asked me if I would take some pics of her for an online profile. I’ve done a lot of erotic photo shoots with boys/men but this was my first time with a woman (really? the joke is too easy) that wasn’t just strictly a headshot.

Now I’m not one of those gays who gets all prissy around naked women. I think some queens are borderline misogynist when they make such a big deal about how disgusted they are. I think the female body is absolutely beautiful. You don’t have to have sex with something to find it lovely.

Having said that, it’s different when it’s your buddy. So while I had a little trepidation, I’m a good friend and took the plunge. Surprisingly, the challenge for me wasn’t seeing my friend’s boobies. No, the hard part for me was tying her up!

I like bondage. But I have the attention span of an amphetamine-addicted squirrel. So I don’t have the patience for someone who takes hours to tie me up before ever getting down to the good stuff. And as a top (don’t laugh), I have even less patience for rope. So I really never learned how to tie someone up.

So enjoy the pics, but be warned that you will probably laugh at my knots. Maybe I need some hand’s -on training?

(And I promise I will be a good pup and be more regular about my postings.)

I’m currently working on a series of articles for Leatherati, entitled Rogue Leatherwomen. Gayle Rubin contributed some amazing thoughts to it which will be published in the upcoming month.

As part of our correspondence, she sent along an article that she wrote in 1999. With her permission, here is a link to download it.

In it, Gayle writes about Leatherfolk expressing concerns about the community not being what they would like it to be. (A complaint that we still hear quite often.) It also discusses, specifically, the women’s community in San Francisco.

Please enjoy!

On behalf of Leatherpage.com, Leland Carina is offering a privately-funded scholarship for research and journalism in the amount of $1,000. This money is intended to cover the flight and hotel for a weekend-long stay in Chicago, providing an opportunity for the recipient to research at the Leather Archives & Museum (LA&M). Any funds remaining after travel costs may be used to further the recipient’s work.

Rick Storer, Executive Director of LA&M, will meet with the recipient to suggest resources that may be useful and provide training on using the museum’s in-house catalogs.

The winner will document their process on Leatherpage.com in blog format and also publish a series of articles based on their findings. Specific subjects may include a wide range of interests; particular proposals are to be made at the time of application.

This scholarship is open to all members of the Leather Community. Applicants will be required to submit a Leather community resume, samples of previous writing/projects, and references. In addition, applicants are asked to respond to a provocative question with a sample article. The most innovative answers will be published on Leatherpage.com.

The scholarship recipient will be determined based on merit. Experience will be considered in relation to time in the community; a promising newer member has equal chance to receive it as does a seasoned veteran. Leland may enlist the help of advisors during the review process.

The mission of this Scholarship is to support community research and journalism, to invite critical thinking about the structure of our community, and to spark engaged public discourse. It is Leland’s hope that this will start a new trend– inspiring organizations and individuals to sponsor similar investigations that will solidly and directly benefit our community.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to request the formal application, to do so please write to Leland (at) Leatherpage (dot) com.

Application deadline is June 30th, 2012. Scholarship will be awarded on or by September 1st. Applicants must be able to successfully complete the work before the end of 2012.

Please help spread the word to people to those you feel should apply!

In 1992, a group of Portland, Oregon leatherdykes got together and decided to organize a women’s Leather club. It was then that Bad Girls, a women’s Leather and BDSM club was born. For the past two decades, the Bad Girls have been one of the Northwest’s premiere women’s Leather clubs, dedicated to education and forging ties not only within the women’s Leather community but across the pansexual community in Portland as well.

Each year, we select a charity and dedicate all of our yearly fundraising to that group. In the recent past, these have been:

In Other Words, one of the few surviving women’s bookstores and community spaces:
Bradley Angle House, a home to protect survivors of domestic violence
the Q-Center, Portland’s queer community center
the Sexual Minorities Youth Resource Center
and many others

We also host monthly and yearly events such as:

The Kinky women’s munch
The Sinsations Sampler and Party
HOWL, an annual BDSM women’s camping event in the Gorge
Sunday School, a day of workshops as part of Oregon Leather Pride
bi-monthly workshops
Full Moon Fridays, a monthly discussion group
Fundraising events

After these years of parties, workshops, discussion groups, and fundraising, we’ve still got a strong group of women who are active in Portland and across the nation. Tonight, we’re celebrating with our larger community with a party and charity event including a silent auction and raffle, with all proceeds benefiting our charity of the year, SMYRC. (For more info on the charity visit www.smyrc.org.) We will also have displays of Bad Girls history and from the Oregon Leather History Project run by Andy Mangels.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating women’s Leather activities and clubs across the nation and world. Here’s to wishing us all another 20 years and more of goodness!

Steve Lenius here, Leather Life columnist for *Lavender* Magazine in Minneapoils/St. Paul, Minnesota.

Allow me to call to your attention my latest column (Issue 440): an appreciation of former Twin Cities realtor, activist and publisher Clark Bufkin, who recently passed on in Palm Springs. As I say in the column, he leaves an enduring and many-faceted legacy to the Twin Cities GLBT community.

On a personal note: before my Leather Life column existed, and before *Lavender* Magazine existed, I had several pieces published in *Gaze* Magazine, of which Clark was publisher. I have always thought that my being offered the Leather Life column in *Lavender* stemmed from the publication of those pieces in *Gaze.* So, for publishing the magazine that first made me a published writer, I owe Clark a big thank-you.

Pick up a printed copy of the latest issue and turn to page 10 or hit the link below:

http://www.lavendermagazine.com/our-lives/leather-life-clark-bufkin-1947-2012-an-appreciation/

You can also access the article in Lavender’s Digital Edition on the web, iPhone or iPad (again, see page 10).

And, in case you missed it, check out the previous column from Issue 438, “A Visit to Leather/Gear Night”:

http://www.lavendermagazine.com/our-lives/leather-life-a-visit-to-leathergear-night/

Thanks for reading!

Hello Leatherpagers. I’m very excited that Leland asked (finally relented to my begging) me to participate here. It’s a wonderful opportunity and actually solves a problem I’ve been dealing with. You see I have my own blog (why yes, thank you of course you can check it out here), but I realize that not everyone who reads it necessarily wants to hear about my sex life (I’m looking at you, Aunt Jody). So here I can explore some of the more randy aspects of my Randy life.

A bit about me. I moved to San Francisco last summer after living in NYC for thirteen years. The official reason is a mid-life crisis. The unofficial reason is I was just ready for a change. I’ve been playing around with leather/kink for almost fifteen years, but I’ve never really felt like part of a “community.” I think that being in San Francisco will give me more of an opportunity to embrace that. I’ve already made some inroads, mostly with the pups (thank you, SF K9 Unit) and am looking forward to exploring even further.

I’m a 36 year-old (soon to be 37) ex-musical theater queen who identifies primarily as a sub/pup, although I have been playing with my Dom/Handler side lately (hey if the twinks want me, who am I to deny them?). I’ve been HIV+ for ten years and while I don’t feel that has much relation to anything leather related, I feel that it’s still an important issue that many people downplay. It does not define me, but I won’t act like it’s not an issue. I feel that non-disclosure gives people an impression that it’s something to be ashamed of.

So I’ll be writing a bit about my experiences (hopefully not coming off as too egocentric) in the kink/leather/bdsm/pup worlds. I’m also an amateur photographer/designer (i.e., professional secretary) and I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of fun photos lately, which I’m excited to share here. In fact, here’s a recent pic I took of some pups for some upcoming K9 Unit events. This is Alpha Kai and Blondie, two very fun pups (I know from experience).

So that’s me. I’m excited to be writing/photoblogging here and I hope you like what I have to say/show.
