I’m currently working on a series of articles for Leatherati, entitled Rogue Leatherwomen. Gayle Rubin contributed some amazing thoughts to it which will be published in the upcoming month.
As part of our correspondence, she sent along an article that she wrote in 1999. With her permission, here is a link to download it.
In it, Gayle writes about Leatherfolk expressing concerns about the community not being what they would like it to be. (A complaint that we still hear quite often.) It also discusses, specifically, the women’s community in San Francisco.
Please enjoy!
Leather Community Research and Journalism Scholarship
On behalf of Leatherpage.com, Leland Carina is offering a privately-funded scholarship for research and journalism in the amount of $1,000. This money is intended to cover the flight and hotel for a weekend-long stay in Chicago, providing an opportunity for the recipient to research at the Leather Archives & Museum (LA&M). Any funds remaining after travel costs may be used to further the recipient’s work.
Rick Storer, Executive Director of LA&M, will meet with the recipient to suggest resources that may be useful and provide training on using the museum’s in-house catalogs.
The winner will document their process on Leatherpage.com in blog format and also publish a series of articles based on their findings. Specific subjects may include a wide range of interests; particular proposals are to be made at the time of application.
This scholarship is open to all members of the Leather Community. Applicants will be required to submit a Leather community resume, samples of previous writing/projects, and references. In addition, applicants are asked to respond to a provocative question with a sample article. The most innovative answers will be published on Leatherpage.com.
The scholarship recipient will be determined based on merit. Experience will be considered in relation to time in the community; a promising newer member has equal chance to receive it as does a seasoned veteran. Leland may enlist the help of advisors during the review process.
The mission of this Scholarship is to support community research and journalism, to invite critical thinking about the structure of our community, and to spark engaged public discourse. It is Leland’s hope that this will start a new trend– inspiring organizations and individuals to sponsor similar investigations that will solidly and directly benefit our community.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to request the formal application, to do so please write to Leland (at) Leatherpage (dot) com.
Application deadline is June 30th, 2012. Scholarship will be awarded on or by September 1st. Applicants must be able to successfully complete the work before the end of 2012.
Please help spread the word to people to those you feel should apply!
In 1992, a group of Portland, Oregon leatherdykes got together and decided to organize a women’s Leather club. It was then that Bad Girls, a women’s Leather and BDSM club was born. For the past two decades, the Bad Girls have been one of the Northwest’s premiere women’s Leather clubs, dedicated to education and forging ties not only within the women’s Leather community but across the pansexual community in Portland as well.
Each year, we select a charity and dedicate all of our yearly fundraising to that group. In the recent past, these have been:
In Other Words, one of the few surviving women’s bookstores and community spaces:
Bradley Angle House, a home to protect survivors of domestic violence
the Q-Center, Portland’s queer community center
the Sexual Minorities Youth Resource Center
and many others Continue reading »

The AZgoL has been in existence as an informal group and also a yahoo group since 2005. Over the years, girl debra has been the yahoo group owner and the girls have had a loose association and occasional get-togethers over the years. slave girl ronda stepped up to be president of the AZgoL in September 2011 at our first “official” club meeting. In February, slave girl ronda stepped down as president due to time constraints and cheryl (Justinsbeach on FL) was nominated for president, slave alena girl was nominated for treasurer, and karen was nominated for secretary/PR/marketing however she has since declined.
The AZgoL are having a meeting on March 25th to finalize the nominations and voting of officers. We will post our updated officer list on the FetLift group and the yahoo group after the meeting. We are working on the by-laws (which were originally borrowed from the SFgoL with permission) and will have a draft out to the AZgoL members later this week to review before the next meeting. We have scheduled monthly girl gatherings for the remainder of 2012 to help keep the club growing and meeting consistently.
The AZgoL were present at Southwest Leather Conference in January and Leather in the Desert March 2-4 in Phoenix. The AZgoL were at SouthPlains LeatherFest in March. I got to spend some time with angel from the SFgoL, and see pink compete as well. So wonderful to see a fellow girl as a titleholder – and she did a fantastic job. We will be present at the upcoming Bizarre Bazaar at APEX in Phoenix on March 24th as well as other leather community events in the future.
With Leland Carina’s assistance and talents, we have AZgoL logos and now t-shirts for sale on cafepress, which of course makes us “official”! LOL. We have about 8-10 girls as members right now and are just beginning to get the word out in the local phoenix community with bar cards in the local leather and lifestyle bars and networking with the Phoenix boys of Leather (PboL).
In leather,
